Whitby Town 2-1 North Ferriby United
Jake Faichney's late goal dashed North Ferriby's FA Cup dreams for another year, as Whitby Town put themselves in the hat for the Third Qualifying Round having trailed to the Villagers at half time.
Ferriby spent the majority of the opening period on the defensive, and Steve Wilson was his ever-reliable self as he palmed a dangerous cross-shot from Callum Martin over the bar, and punched clear Callum Hassan's goal-bound header from Alex White's in-swinging cross. Wayne Brooksby had Ferriby's best chance of the opening half hour when Paul Harsley picked the winger out in the box only for him to shoot low and wide. But Ferriby would take the lead seven minutes before the break through some great persistent attacking play. First Gary Bradshaw rattled the cross-bar with a powerful drive from Tom Clarke's lay-off, then Clarke crossed the loose ball into the path of Nathan Peat, who saw his effort blocked on the line by Whitby keeper Tom Courtney, but Bradshaw was on hand to turn home the rebound.
The second half was only six minutes old when the home side drew level; Martin's cross to the far post found Callum Hassan in prime position to add the finishing touch with his head. Ferriby were gifted an opportunity to re-establish their advantage when substitute John Leonard was upended in the box by Ibrahim Hassan, but Brooksby's penalty was palmed away by a diving Courtney. Whitby skipper Mark Robinson's free kick skimmed the top of Wilson's goal soon afterwards, while at the other end Kevin Larvin fired an effort just beyond the far post from out wide. The stalemate was broken in the home side's favour on 87 minutes, by a man who had been on the field for just two. After Wilson blocked Matty Tymon's initial effort at close quarters, Faichney was on hand the slot into an empty net. Ferriby face a stern test upon their return to league action next Saturday, with a trip to erstwhile table-toppers Northwich Victoria.
