NFU v York City

North Ferriby United 0  York City 3

An entertaining and competitive match saw York City gain a victory that was not as comfortable as the scoreline might suggest. Ferriby's defence and midfield gave a resolute performance against a strong and well-organised York side.

New signing, the experienced Pauls Harsley, was prominent in both defence and midfield. Ben Turner returned to the side after Mansfield agreed to extend his loan period to Christmas.

The first 20 minutes were end-to-end but neither side created a clear goal-scoring opportunity as good approach play was thwarted by determined defensive work.

On 22 minutes Alex Lawless shot narrowly over the Ferriby goal. Within a minute a sweeping  move started by Ferriby defender Paul Harsley from his own penalty area ended with York keeper  Michael Ingham flying full-length to turn Chris White's shot for a corner.

On 24 minutes Steve Wilson saved low to his left from Michael Gash. Three minutes later York took the lead when Wilson parried  Gash's shot to Jonathan Smith who scored from eight yards.

The first chance of the second half fell to David McGurk who headed narrowly wide from a corner. Michael Rankine then set-up Gash who shot wide from a good position.

Ferriby almost equalised in the 59th minute when Ingham a fumbled  low shot from Russell Fry but the keeper recovered to reach ball before the on-rushing Chris Bolder.

The Minstermen extended their lead in the 70th minute when Lawlesss broke down the right and crossed for Gash to power a header past Wilson.

York had the greater possession but Ferriby's defence was proving hard to break down. Rankine and George Purcell, twice, both went close for York. Purcell scored York's third in the 90th minute, scoring from 18 yards after being put through by Till.

Manager Neil Allison will, no doubt, have been pleased with much of his team's performance. He has a squad which seeks to play entertaining football but which is also prepared to work hard.
