Evostik League Premier Division
26 October 2010
North Ferriby United 2 Stocksbridge Park Steels 1
Ferriby dominated the first half but still ended up going in a goal down at half-time. The half was a story of blocked shots and missed opportunities as Ferriby carved-out chance after chance.
Gary Bradshaw had 20 yard free-kick blocked after 6 minutes. Two minutes later Stocksbridge keeper Dave Ratcliffe made a superb one-handed diving save from a Chris Bolder shot. Shortly after Bradshaw was forced wide by Ratcliffe as he bore down on goal.
Totally against the run of play Stocksbridge took the lead after 16 minutes. A hopeful high ball to the far post was mishandled by Ferriby keeper Steve Wilson and the ball rebounded into the goal off Tom Matthews
The half continued with Bradshaw and Alex Davidson both going close with shots. Davidson then beat the off-side trap on the right-hand side but the ball slid wide as he placed it beyond Ratcliffe.
Mark Ward missed a good opportunity for Stocksbridge on 30 minutes, shooting over when well-placed.
The half finished with Steve Burton heading over from a Russell Fry corner, Bradshaw seeing a turn and 20 yard shot go narrowly over and Davidson just beaten by Racliffe to a through-ball.
The second half opened with a chance for each side. Bradshaw went close with a 20 yard shot and Alex Callery saw a header bounce off the Ferriby bar. Ferriby equalised after 49 minutes when Wayne Brooksby's run and cross from the right found Alex Davidson who scored from 12 yards.
A minute later Ratcliffe just beat Bradshaw to another through-ball. Ferriby continued to dominate without creating any clear-cut chances until late in the game. On 83 minutes Chris Bolder headed at the keeper. A long Russsell Fry free-kick eluded everybody but Ratcliffe who grabbed it just before it crossed the line.
The winner came in the 90th minute after a penetrating run by Matthews who played a neat pass to Alex Davidson who placed his shot past the keeper and saw it go in off the inside of the post.
It was well-deserved win for The Villagers who, once again, played some attractive and decisive football.
