North Ferriby United 1-0 Whitby Town
North Ferriby United stretched their winning run to six games as they dumped Whitby Town out of the Doodson Sport Cup, gaining a measure of revenge for their FA Cup exit at the hands of the North Yorkshire side last month. The game saw Matty Plummer make his return to Ferriby having re-signed for the Villagers last week from Bradford Park Avenue
The opening half hour saw Ferriby dominate the possession but their opponents come closest to opening the scoring. Nathan Peat had to clear of the line when a deflected corner fell to Callum Martin, and Martin was again denied in the goalmouth soon afterwards, Peter Davidson coming to the rescue this time. However, Ferriby grabbed the lead their overall superiority merited on 36 minutes, a flowing move from a restart culminated in Gary Bradshaw laying off for Russell Fry to bury low into the bottom corner from the edge of the area, the midfielder's first goal of the season. Home keeper Adam Nicklin ensured Ferriby maintained their lead at the break when he acrobatically pushed Jeff Smith's free kick around the post on the stroke of half time.
Billy Heath's side began the second half in the ascendancy; Sam Denton had a goal disallowed for a foul on Whitby keeper Tom Courtney, and Wayne Brooksby curled a dangerous ball into the path of Bradshaw only for Courtney to catch the striker's effort. Ferriby then had to weather some heavy pressure from their visitors in the closing stages; Andy Leeson flicked Smith's free kick goalbound only for Nicklin to catch, Martin blazed ferociously across goal with the ball hitting the far post on the way out for a goal kick, and Smith struck the crossbar with a shot on the turn. Ferriby are back in league action this Saturday as they welcome Marine to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
