North Ferriby United 1-2 Hessle Rangers
North Ferriby United's hopes of lifting the East Riding Senior Cup for a sixth consecutive year were dashed as Hessle Rangers pulled off an almighty shock to end the Villagers' seven-match unbeaten run.
Humber Premier League Hessle caught Ferriby cold with a goal inside the first minute. A Ferriby corner was cleared into the path of Mike Jones, who carried the ball from the half-way line to smash past Steve Wilson and give the underdogs the advantage. Ferriby then laid siege to the visitors' goal for the remainder of the half. Away keeper Luke Picken failed to hold onto a Gary Bradshaw free kick, forcing his defence to scramble hastily clear, while another Bradshaw free kick later landed narrowly wide the post. Picken ensured his side maintained their lead going into the break when blocked an effort from Peter Davidson and held onto the ball when it rebounded back off the Ferriby man.
Picken was in fine form early in the second half, as he acrobatically palmed Matt Plummer's half volley over the bar, and then pushed an effort from the same player around the post. It would be Plummer's actions at the other end of the pitch that decided the game; the defender pulled down Jones in the box during a rare Hessle attack, resulting in a red card for Plummer and Jones putting Hessle two to the good from the spot. Soon afterwards, Bradshaw had a header disallowed for offside as Ferriby renewed their onslaught. The reply finally came with six minutes to go, a Paul Harsley corner rebounded out to Bradshaw, who crossed for Wayne Brooksby to beat Picken with a diving header. Picken pushed away a Russell Fry free kick and saw numerous deflections turn goal-bound Ferriby efforts fractionally wide as his side held on for an unlikely victory. Ferriby return to the business of the league on Saturday as they travel to Stafford Rangers.
