Nantwich Town 2-1 North Ferriby United
North Ferriby still hold on to their play-off spot despite tasting defeat at relegation-threatened Nantwich Town, who boosted their survival hopes and extended the Villagers' winless run to five games.
Ferriby began brightest, with Wayne Brooksby sliding a perfect ball into the path of Peter Davidson in the opening seconds, but the young midfielder was unable to get a telling touch. Davidson was able to get a shot away a few minutes later when Gary Bradshaw sent him through on goal, but found Nantwich keeper Daniel Platt in his way. At the other end, Ferriby skipper Paul Foot came to the rescue to head a Jason Oswell cross off the line, but later had to leave the field due to injury. Nantwich had the bulk of attacking play for the remainder of the half; Steve Wilson in the Ferriby goal did well to hold onto a 25-yard drive from Rod McDonald, and later pulled off a wonderful reflex save when he leapt to palm Glynn Blackhurst's cross-shot over the bar. However, the Nantwich pressure was to bear fruit on the stroke of half time; after Wilson blocked Blackhurst's original shot, Oswell slotted the loose ball into an empty net.
More good goalkeeping by Wilson prevented Nantwich from doubling their lead early in the second period, the veteran blocking McDonald's shot with his body and smothering the ball from a crowd of onrushing players. The arrival of Rodney Jack from the bench gave Nantwich a new dimension in attack; on 76 minutes, the former Crewe Alexandra man's run down the left found Oswell in the box, and after Wilson turned his shot around the post, Oswell rose highest to head home Jake Sedgemore's resulting corner. Jack himself could have added a third soon afterwards after another good run, but Wilson blocked his resulting shot. Just three minutes later, Ferriby gave themselves a foothold on the game and set up a dramatic final ten minutes. Substitute Kyle Hadley whipped a ball across the box and the onrushing Bradshaw powered home. Russell Fry very nearly grabbed the Villagers in an equaliser with a low 20-yard drive in the dying minutes, but Platt was able to push the effort around the post.
