FC Halifax Town 0-2 North Ferriby United
A thoroughly professional performance saw North Ferriby United pick up three points on the road at FC Halifax Town, the first home defeat suffered by the league leaders in 586 days.
From the off Ferriby made it clear they were not going to make matters easy for their hosts, although the Shaymen had the lions' share of possession in the opening 20 minutes they were restricted to half chances. Halifax captain Mark Bower headed over from Scott Metcalfe's corner, and James Dean found himself through on goal when Ben Turner gave away possession but fired straight at Ferriby keeper Steve Wilson. After having struggled to unlock the home defence, the visitors broke through in style on 27 minutes, when Russell Fry ran onto Chris Bolder's through ball, broke into the box and slotted home from a narrow angle after rounding Jonathan Hedge in the Halifax goal. The Shaymen almost levelled immediately afterwards, but Wilson did excellently to claw away Jamie Vardy's jumping volley. Hedge presented the Villagers with a golden chance of doubling their advantage on 34 minutes when he clattered Gary Bradshaw as they jumped for the ball, but saved Bolder's resulting penalty low to his left.
Halifax's search for an equaliser continued in the second half, Wilson had to gather at close range when the ball deflected dangerously off Dean, and Vardy had a golden chance when he broke onto Simon Garner's ball across the box but fired over. Tom Baker nearly gifted Ferriby the points when he headed the ball back to his startled goalkeeper who only just managed to touch it round the post, and on 77 minutes the win was secured when substitute Wayne Brooksby played in Bradshaw, who made himself space and slotted the ball beyond the dive of Hedge into the bottom corner. Halifax had a number of chances to forge their way back into the game, but both Garner and Dean were thwarted by Wilson, but Sam Denton and Steve Burton in the Ferriby backline continued their sterling work to ensure the home side were subjected to their first defeat in ten games.
