Burscough 1-2 North Ferriby United

A stunning late strike from Wayne Brooksby earned North Ferriby United their first win of the season as they took all three points from their away encounter with Burscough.

A strong opening ten minutes saw Ferriby commanding the ball in the opposing half; Chris Bolder had the first opportunity when he half-volleyed wide on the turn, and after Ferriby keeper Steve Wilson twice foiled Burscough's Karl Gornell at the other end, Bolder put the Villagers ahead on 7 minutes when he slid onto Phil Jackman's through ball and pushed it beyond onrushing Burscough keeper Chris Thompson. After Thompson parried a Gary Bradshaw effort to prevent Ferriby going two goals to the good, the home side pulled level on 15 minutes, when Andy Barlow's long ball sailed over the head of Wilson and into the path of Ashley Higgins, who was left with an easy finish. Wilson kept honours even shortly afterwards when he smartly saved James Connolly's first-time shot from Liam Blakeman's cross, while Russell Fry and Wayne Brooksby saw shots go narrowly wide for Ferriby before the interval.

Another bright start saw Ferriby come close to regaining their lead early in the second half, Thompson using his legs to foil Bradshaw after he had been played in by Paul Harsley. After Brooksby had a strong shout for a penalty waved away by the referee, Ferriby came a hair's breadth from a second yet again when Bradshaw's looping ball into the box was headed over by Bolder almost on the goal-line. Burscough's substitutes provided them with their best chances of winning the tie; Connor Roberts let fly from the edge of the area only to see his shot skim the crossbar, and Mark Houghton succeeded in rounding Wilson only for Kevin Larvin to block on the line. However, it would be Ferriby who wrapped up the tie in style two minutes from time. Fry arrowed a long ball into the box, where skipper Paul Foot was able to head it into the path of Brooksby, who fired first time into the top corner. Ferriby looked to build on their breakthrough victory when they welcome Stocksbridge Park Steels to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Tuesday night.
