Evostik League Premier Division
19 March 2011
Ashton United 0 North Ferriby United 1 (Alex Davidson, pen 54 mins)
On an uneven pitch that made ball control and accurate passing difficult, North Ferriby gained three vital points to consolidate their 3rd place in the Evostik Premier Dviision.
It was a game of contrasting styles with Ashton playing a long-ball game aimed at their two target men, Aaron Burns and Jonathon Bathurst. Ferriby tried to play their usual passing game but the pitch conditions made this difficult.
Ashton had most of the possession in the first 20 minutes. Burns shot over after Steve Wilson had parried a Bathurst shot and Ben Morley got in a blocking challenge on Matty O'Neil as the midfielder tried to get in a shot.
Ferriby gradually played themselves back into the game. A move involving Russell fry, Alex Davidson and Gary Bradshaw ended with Chris Bolder shooting in to the side-netting.
A Fry header was held on the line by home keeper Terry Smith and Bolder again shot narrowly wide. Just before half-time Bradshaw's 35 yard free-kick was saved low by Smith diving to his left.
The game turned in the 54th minute. The referee had no hesitation in sending-off Ashton's Liam dawson for handling a Bolder shot on the goal-line. Alex Davidson powerfully hit the resultant penalty just inside Smith's right-hand post.
Ashton continued with their aerial assault but Sam Denton and Paul Foot were unflappable and commanding at the heart of The Villagers' defence. Ashton were restricted to only one clear chance in the second-half with Wilson making a double save from substitute Marlin Piana.
Chances were equally rare at the other end with Wayne Brooksby coming closest to increasing Ferriby's lead. However, smith was out of his goal quickly to smother Brooksby's shot as the winger broke through.
It may have been a case of "winning ugly" but Ferriby will not mind that as they consolidated their grip on 3rd place. As Manager John Anderson said, " At this stage of the season it's all about winning your matches and taking three points and I was pleased with the result."
